John A. (Tony) McHugh

Tony is a trial attorney with more than 25 years experience in insurance coverage disputes and complex tort lawsuit involving products liability claims, professional E&O exposures, construction defect cases and business torts. He has represented doctors, engineers, bankers, contractors and executives in large dollar cases.

His current practice includes various lines of insurance: additional insured coverage; advertising injury and personal injury liability coverage; bad faith litigation; broker liability; builder’s risk coverage; commercial general liability (CGL) insurance; commercial property insurance; contractor liability coverage; cyber-risks coverage; directors & officers (D&O) coverage; employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) coverage; errors & omissions (E&O) coverage; excess and umbrella coverage and professional liability coverage.

Tony has broad experience representing the insurance industry. He cut his teeth handling personal lines claims and graduated to defending multi-million dollar bad faith exposures. He also served as regional outside counsel for a major CGL insurer, providing coverage advice on claims in Washington, California, Alaska, Oregon, Montana and Idaho. For the past ten years, Tony has spent a substantial portion of his time representing property carriers insuring commercial risks and providing guidance on business interruption claims and extra expense losses.

He is an active member of the state bars of Washington and Florida. He is also admitted to federal courts, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Tony was born in Brooklyn, went to law school in Washington, D.C. and lived in Chicago and Los Angeles before moving 20 years ago to Seattle. He now counts himself a Northwest native. Tony and his wife Carol have three children. They enjoy gardening, antique-hunting, bicycling, camping and taking walks in the woods. Tony also plays poker and chess.

He has published and regularly lectures on insurance coverage/bad faith issues. He also serves as a mediator in complex disputes.
